6 Things #64: September
Howdy friends, how's it going? I’m here with a fresh dose of 6 things that've been happening/keeping my heart happy in the past month. If you’re new here, hello! Welcome to my newsletter ❤️ Thanks so much for being here and spending a few moments of your month with me. Let’s get crackin’, shall we?
After not leaving the country for 2 years, last month Joe and I managed to rack up 6 flights in the space of 8 days. Needless to say, the tiredness was real 😂 As a 6 Things first, I felt compelled to added pictures(!!) to this month’s newsletter and give you a visual connection to what I’m sharing with you. Why this hasn’t crossed my mind before genuinely puzzles me, but here we are! I hope you like it. Right, let’s chat about September 🥹 Here are my highlights:
1. 🇩🇪 Reeperbahn Festival
I played my first ever show in Germany/outside of the UK!! So honoured to have been selected to play Reeperbahn Festival in Hamburg this year; an industry-wide known showcase festival and conference. Playing Reeperbahn has been on my career wish-list for YEARS, so it was very surreal to be there and actually play. It was a wild 48 hours, including setting up during a game of Bongo’s Bingo (yep) and cramming in some sight-seeing before our flights home. Huge thanks to Generator for the opportunity and giving me the platform to share my sad songs in EUROPE! I had a mint time 🥹❤️🔥
Also, a special shout-out to Juergen - he drove 5 hours across Germany to see Joe and I play Reeperbahn!! We’ve known Juergen from afar since our Kickstarter campaigns (mine for the Golden Hour vinyl in 2020, and Joe for his Making Notes EP in 2022). It was incredibly special to meet him and spend the evening in his company ❤️
2. 🏖️🇬🇷 Rhodes
Before hitting our German gig debut, we were basking in 30-degree heat in Rhodes. We flew to Greece on Joe’s birthday (cheaper flights at great timing) - the hotel receptionist realised it was his birthday and he upgraded our room to include our own private pool!! 😂 It was class. Reading by the pool, being big kids on water slides (fun fact, we love a water park), exploring Rhodes’ Old Town and eating delicious food. We had the best time, a much-needed break!
3. 🍿📽️ The Prestige
An incredible(!!) film about two magicians and their long-standing rivalry. I didn’t know what to expect, aside from knowing the premise and it being directed by Christopher Nolan, but it’s amazing (and I called the ending!!!). I would 100% watch The Prestige again. I imagine it’s the type of film where you notice more on a second watch, too. If you’re on the look-out for a film to dive into this weekend, let it be this.
4. 📱 Duolingo
Hours after leaving Hamburg, I had this urge to learn more German. Relying on school lessons aged 12/13 only gets you so far 😂 What did I do? I downloaded Duolingo. My streak is already out of the window and I’m only on the free version, but learning new words and phrases has been so fun!! If you’re a fellow duolingo-er, let’s be friends - my username is @jodienic96.
5. 🎼 before close
AHH the secret’s OUT! Joe and I have a new duo project, before close 🥹 We’re finally able to share what we recorded in March this year on our off-grid trip to Alnmouth. ‘thank god’ is out now and our second single ‘what am i supposed to do with it?’ will be yours next Friday! We’re so, so excited to share this music with you. If you’re an avid Substack-er, we’re sharing more about the writing/recording process on our before close mailing list, and you best believe I’m going to town on it 😂 Fingers crossed it’s the start of many off-grid recording adventures!! If you have any cool off-grid cabin/hut suggestions, we’re all ears 🙆🏻♀️
6. 🎧 On Purpose with Jay Shetty - Emma Watson
Am I entering my podcast era at 29? It’s starting to seem that way! This episode is not for the faint-hearted at a lengthy 2:30hrs+, but it’s full of so much beauty, wisdom, honesty, kindness - the list goes on. I loved watching/listening to every part of this conversation. Whether you’re a fan of Emma Watson and her work or not(!), it’s a really beautiful episode. I highly recommend it.
So, they're my 6 things for September! What were your highlights from the month? I’d love to hear from you.
Until my next update, you know where to find me 😎
Big love, Jodie x
I’m on tour this month!! ❤️🔥 London and Bristol, you’re next! It’s not too late to get tickets, come and join me x

The gig last night at the Vault made me very happy. Loved hearing you and Joe, The Early Purple and Rail Replacement service. Love to you all 💖
